Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included in the Reports package?

Our reports are standard email attachments for up to three users with summary data on New Dwellings sent quarterly, which includes two reports:

  1. by geography at the county & municipality level
  2. bi-annual regional trends.
What’s included in the Portal package?

The Portal includes the Reports package for up to 10 users plus access to online dashboards with charts, maps, and graphs that visualize all the data. Also available through the Portal is historical data and different categories of residential construction data.

What’s included in the Datafeed package?

The Datafeed package includes Reports and the Portal for an unlimited number of users plus all raw data piped directly to you via our API. The data is made available on a rolling basis.

How often is data refreshed?

Our data is refreshed on a quarterly basis with a one quarter lag time. But the Portal or Datafeed package provides access to data on a rolling basis, in other words, as we get data so do you.

What geographic area is included?

Each region comprises a number of counties and municipalities. We are currently only available in Northeast Ohio, which includes 13 counties and 282 cities, townships, villages, jurisdictions. The 13 counties are: Ashtabula, Carroll, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Huron, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas.

How many years of historical data do you have?

For Portal or Datafeed subscribers, our data currently goes back to 2021 full year. We are planning to bring online additional historical years in the near future.

What kinds of data do you have?

We focus on New Dwelling data. We also have all residential construction data, which we categorize into New Dwelling, Addition, Alteration, Multi-Family, and Plumbing/ HVAC/ Electric. In addition to these five categories, we also sub-categorize this data into 25+ other fields such as Single Family, Door/ Window, Fence, and Roof/ Siding. For a complete list of our sub-categories, please contact us.

How do I use the data?

Our customers use Permitly data for multiple purposes, such as for market intelligence, sales planning, capital allocation, strategic decision-making, and investment measurement.

Where does your data come from?

We acquire and aggregate permit data in its raw form from many local building departments. We then cleanse and fuse all the datasets together to make them more functional and useful. Finally, we deliver our enriched data to customers in three easily accessible formats: reports, the portal, and a datafeed.

How accurate is your data?

Data accuracy is our priority. We’re limited by the quality and breadth of data available from local building departments; however, we’re continuously working with them to improve what they provide. Simultaneously, we regularly stress test our data to identify and fix anomalies within our datasets.

Is the data new enough to bid projects?

We generally have a one quarter lag time, although we make available through our Portal & Datafeed packages all data as it’s ready. This means it’s often too late to bid on a specific project. This is a relationship-driven industry and what we provide is the information needed for you to develop the right relationships for future business.
